Whenever we’re itching for a change, most look to change up their hair color. It’s a great way to express yourself, enter a new era, or to just try something new for a special event. Coloring your locs is always a fun time, but sometimes it’s not always the healthiest. Here’s a quick guide to help maintain healthy locs while rocking your new hair color!

1. Hydration

Once you color your hair, depending on if you went lighter or not, you can immediately feel the difference. It’ll feel a bit brittle and dry, which is normal since you have now stripped your hair of its natural oils. It is crucial that you bring back that moisture times 10 and maintain it going forward. Here’s a few ways you can be on top of your hydration game.

This rich yet simple blend of 4 essential oils – lemongrass, tea tree, eucalyptus, and jojoba – will work harmoniously to combat dry, itchy scalp while stimulating hair growth. These carefully selected oils possess unique properties that promote a healthy scalp and encourage the growth of strong, luscious hair.

Experience the power of nature’s botanical treasures to nourish, strengthen, and rejuvenate your hair from root to tip.

Integrating these few tips into your routine will keep your locs hydrated at all times. Not only will you feel the difference, you will also see the difference in how your locs move freely.

2. Night Protection

Our nighttime routine is just as important as our morning routine. Making sure you’re protecting your locs every night whether that be with a bonnet, durag, or a satin pillowcase, it is imperative that you maintain the moisture you’re bringing in.

As we all know our hair loves satin and hates cotton. Cotton tends to dry out our hair and leaves behind lint that is sometimes impossible to get out of our locs. Protecting them from anything that’ll suck the moisture out is key with color treated locs.

3. Conditioning Treatments

Now that you have stripped away a good bulk of your natural oils, you have to be on top of constantly putting it back in. Monthly hot oil deep condition treatments will be your best friend in this stage.

These treatments are just a combination of great conditioners and oils plastered through out your locs, while you sit under a heated dryer for about 30-45 minutes. The heat will help your locs absorb the moisture, helping it lock in and make a difference immediately. Once done you’ll want to rinse everything out with cold water and shampoo like normal.

Doing these monthly will help you retain moisture, soften your locs, and keep them healthy.

4. Choosing The Right Products

Now that you have colored treated locs, you have to use the correct products for them. Not doing so could cost you your brand new color.

Using both clarifying and hydrating shampoo, that’s for color treated hair, helps you keep your color vibrant and keep moisture in. My favorite hydrating shampoo is ORS Olive Oil Sulfate-Free Shampoo, and Differ Rosemary Mint Shampoo is my favorite clarifying shampoo. These two leave your locs feeling clean, soft, and doesn’t break the bank!

Also, your retwisting product shouldn’t leave your hair and scalp feeling itchy and dry. Try to opt for more natural products like aloe vera gel and or oil to combat itchiness and maintain moisture.

Conclusion

Coloring your locs is always an exciting experience, but it shouldn’t ruin your locs along the way. Your newly colored locs now requires your close attention to maintain its health and luster. By following these tips and adapting to a new routine, you’ll be able to rock your new healthy hair color confidently!
