Top 5 Reasons I Finally Decided To Dye My Locs Black (And Why You Should Too).

This post is all about reasons you should dye your locs.

6–8 minutes

As I approach my 5th year with my locs, I’ve grown to become a little bored with the color of them.

For the longest I kept playing it safe, only touching up my highlights every so often when I wanted a “change”.

Hair color paint wax was my go-to whenever I craved a pop of color. It let me experiment without consequences. But something always held me back from going all in—maybe it was fear, or maybe I just wasn’t ready to commit to the change.

But turning 24 this year felt like the perfect time for a bold move—so I went all in and dyed my locs jet black. And baby let me tell you, can’t nobody tell me NOTHING!!!

With all that being said, here are my top 5 reasons I finally decided to dye my locs black and why you should too if you’ve been thinking about it.

#1. Cleaner, Dark Feminine Look

As mentioned earlier I had highlights since the start of my loc journey, and I absolutely loved them. I adored the different hues and tones of each highlight, and it gave me a sense of not being boxed in with one all around color. But as time went on, I felt it just didn’t align with my style anymore.

With any hair style from any race, in my personal opinion, jet black hair has such a clean put together look. For women specifically, it portrays a dark feminine touch and that is truly right up my alley.

With every year, I’m getting closer to defining my signature look—and jet black just fits. It’s strong, classic, and exactly the kind of energy I want to carry.

#2. It’s A Classic Color

With jet black being a universal hair color across all races, it’s considered a classic in everyone’s books.

Jet black hair has a sleek, polished look that never goes out of style. Its deep, rich tone gives off the feel of mystery, sophistication, and intensity that can be both striking and subtle—making it versatile for all eras and aesthetics.

And not just with hair, but with fashion as well. Clothes, shoes, accessories—black is that go to color when you need to feel and be put together quickly, without any effort.

#3. Tested With Hair Paint Wax First

Honestly, I didn’t feel the need to go permanent right away—there are so many hair paint wax colors to try, it made more sense to test things out first.

The day I tried out “Molasses” by ORS Color Blast, I was hooked. The coverage was out of this world and it genuinely looked like I actually dyed my locs black. From there I seen the full vision. I kept that color in for an entire month, I was so obsessed with it!

But recently I wanted to use that same hair paint wax again but I could not find it anywhere, which led me to believe they didn’t sell it anymore. At that point I had to make a decision—“Am I going to let uncertainty get in the way of my swag?” NAH.

#4. It Aligns With My Style Better

The more I explore my style, the more I realize how much I’m drawn to depth and mood. There’s something about a darker aesthetic that feels powerful and grounding. And there’s a certain mystery to jet black hair, and I’m all about keeping people wondering.

When it comes to fashion, I would consider myself very experimental. Bold platform boots. Funky scarfs. Oversized tops and bottoms—I do it all. And with that, I often lean towards more simple makeup, hair color, and style. Keeping the attention on my clothes, shoes, and accessories.

When I had my highlights, I felt bland—basic if you will. And me and basic just doesn’t go in the same sentence. I had to do something about it quickly, and sure enough I did exactly what needed to be done.

#5. It’s a New Year, Duh!

And of course the most cliche but real reason of them all, it’s 2025, a brand new year for something new and refreshing.

A new year is more than just another calendar year, but a chance to restart. A mental reset. Starting over gives you the chance to try again, and do it better with the wisdom you’ve gained overtime.

In life you have to constantly try new things in order to grow. Staying in your comfort zone will not only deter you from elevating, but it won’t allow you to truly live. You stop challenging yourself. You stop risking. And eventually, you stop growing. Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you take a leap—when you feel unsure, maybe even scared, but you go for it anyway. That’s where transformation lives.

So do something crazy. Stay up later than usual. Try new foods. Text your crush. Move to a new city. Laugh louder. Love harder. Live your life to the fullest. Because one day, you’ll look back and realize time didn’t wait for you—and neither did the life you could’ve lived.

Like Ferris Bueller said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
And it’s true. It’s easy to get caught up in routines, responsibilities, and playing it safe that we forget to actually live. You only live once, so live everyday to the fullest.

Tips & Tricks for Coloring Locs

  • Hydration is key after coloring locs. Deep condition before and after the process, and keep your locs moisturized with serums or leave-ins.

I used nothing but Sienna Naturals plant-based products throughout my entire dye process, and let me tell you—my locs feel so hydrated and soft after just one use.

  • If you’re going lighter, consider doing it in stages to avoid damage. Locs hold on to color differently than loose hair, and rushing can cause breakage.
  • Protect your color—and your moisture—by sleeping with a satin or silk scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase.
  • Try to extend time between washes to preserve your color. When you do wash, use cool or lukewarm water instead of hot—it helps the pigment last longer.
