That fresh retwist feeling is unmatched.

The cool breeze tickling your scalp; hair oil acting as a silky blanket; and the lovely thought of “wait is my hair getting longer?!”

Those first few days remind you that you still got it. But by day 10… you may start looking like who did it and why, but that doesn’t have to be the case.

In today’s blog we’re going to talk all about how to make your retwist last longer, products you should be using after a retwist, and do’s and don’ts of a retwist.

This post is all about how to make a retwist last longer.

  1. How Long Should A Retwist Last You Anyways?
  2. Leave Your Locs Alone.
  3. Keep Locs Wrapped.
  4. Choose A Loc Style.
  5. After Retwist Must-Have Products.

How Long Should A Retwist Last You Anyways?

For starters, a retwist won’t look as fresh as it did when you first walked out the chair, that’s number one. Throughout your day to day, you’re going to sweat, scratch, run your fingers through, and whatever else you may do outside of the salon, to your hair. It’s normal.

On average, a retwist should last you anywhere from 2-3 weeks. The goal here is to not try and emulate what day 1 of your retwist looked like, but more so help you get more out of it than just a few days. Trust me, it’s possible.

Leave Your Locs Alone.

People don’t realize how this small act can shorten the longevity of a retwist without you even noticing. Manipulating your locs too much by doing at home styles or whatever else you may try, can overtime cause unwanted frizziness.

If you did not get a style during your maintenance appointment, you should be leaving your locs down for as long as you can, keeping them in place exactly how they are.

I’d also like to add for the ladies, try not to do excessive baby hairs too early. Yes I know, the baby hair connoisseur really just said that, but I’m here to keep it real with you. When I do my own retwist, I don’t attempt to swoop any type of baby hair until week 3, if that. When doing my retwist and clients, I only like to do subtle sweeps on the edges right into the root of the loc, nothing more nothing less. That is because overtime once you start doing the dramatic edges, you will have to keep redoing them, pulling out more hairs from the roots and eventually erasing all the neatness that was there once before.

Keep Locs Wrapped.

People often think you only need to have your locs wrapped when it’s time for bed, but that could be further from the truth. If you want to keep your retwist very neat, keep some type of hair protection on throughout the entire day if you can. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bonnet neither, in fact, I’d recommend you put those to rest once you start locs.

Loc socks or loc durags are an essential piece in your loc journey. For loc socks specifically, there are so many different styles and colors that you can choose from that allows you to wear them out in public without looking like you’re ready for bed (no shade). Keeping these on throughout the day will help wick away sweat, keep flyaways down, and keep your locs in tact. For myself, I love to wear either a fashionable satin scarf or a bandana, both help keep my locs neat while on the go.

Choose A Loc Style.

Although styling locs too often can thin them out overtime, styles do help preserve your retwist longer versus not getting one at all.

On average you should keep your loc style in for 2-3 weeks max. That’s almost half the time you should be waiting to get your next retwist. Once you take the style out you’ll be given at least another 2 weeks of semi-neatness post style take down too!

With that being said, if you have an event coming up, a family vacation, or you simply just want to have your locs stay cleaner for longer, opt for a style to elongate that retwist.

Most loc styles help keep your retwist fresh for longer but styles I recommend are 2 strand twists/plaits or any type of barrel twist style. These will leave a slight curl in your locs allowing you to have a 2 in 1 style as well!

After Retwist Must-Have Products.

After your retwist, it is crucial that you use the correct tools/products to help preserve your retwist for longer. For starters, I truly recommend everyone to invest in a satin pillow case. It took me a while to get into this specific product but once I did, the ease I experienced made it a no brainer. I noticed when my locs are freshly retwisted, my loc scarf always seems to slide off in the middle of the night, but my satin pillow case acts as a second barrier of protection!

Some other great products to have on standby are foam, wrap strips, and a handheld or hooded dryer. This trio will freshen up your locs when you need a quick touch up at home. I’ll take it a step further and say pick up a travel size bottle as well, having foam on the go with a few strips is a lifesaver!
