I remember the day like it was yesterday.

1. Choose a Parting System That Fits You Best

When deciding on a parting system you want to consider a few things, desired look, hair density, and longevity.

To give a quick refresher, these are the type of parting systems you can choose from when starting locs:

  • Square/Brick
  • Circle/C-shaped
  • Triangle
  • Diamond
  • Free form/Organic Parts

Square Parting

Square parting is a commonly used parting system because of how straight forward it is. This parting system is great if you want a neat and organized look, easier to maintain, with longterm consistency.

Hair density: This parting system is great for all hair types.

Longevity: As the locs mature, this parting system will still be neat and defined.

Circle or C-parts

Circle or C-parting is another straight forward, easy to do parting system. This system is great for those who are looking for a fuller look and a more natural appearance.

Hair density: This parting system is great for those with finer hair.

Longevity: As the locs mature, the parting system will still be neat and defined.

Triangle Parts

Triangle parting is an intricate parting system that gives the illusion of a fuller set of locs. This parting system is great for those who want a unique set of locs with personality.

Hair density: This system is great for those with finer textures.

Longevity: Parts may not stay in its defined shape as the locs mature.

Diamond Parting

Diamond parts are another system great for the illusion of a fuller set of locs and uniqueness. Great for those with finer hair textures!

Hair density: All hair types can choose this system, but finer hair can benefit the most.

Longevity: Parts may not stay in its defined shape as the locs mature.

Freeform/Organic Parting

Freeform/Oragnic parts is great for those who would like for their locs to do their own thing. With this particular system you wouldn’t get any maintenance, this will allow them to truly be freeform.

Hair density: This system would be suitable for kinkier hair types only.

Longevity: This system may change overtime as the locs mature.

Figuring out what parting system fits you best is by far the most overwhelming part of it all. But even if you change your mind later on (hopefully within the 2 month mark), you can always go back and change it before it’s too late.

2. Your Locs Will Thicken Over Time

When first starting your locs, you tend to over analyze every little thing—the parting, the color, and even the thickness.

Once you have started your locs, you should be spraying them everyday or 3-4 times a week (up to you), which will help your locs matte up quicker and begin the locking process.

With the locking process, not only will your locs begin to matte, but they will thicken overtime and possibly become thicker than you may have expected.

Some different sizing parts include:

When deciding on the size of your parts, be aware that they won’t stay the same size starting out and will size up.

3. Don’t Compare Your Locs To Others

Believe me when I tell you I understand wanting to have your locs look EXACTLY like someone else but I am also here to tell you, it just isn’t realistic.

There’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from someone, but trying to emulate them is another thing.

See your loc journey is suppose to be unique to you, no one’s locs should be identical to one another. It’ll take away the individuality within the journey you’ll go through with yourself.

Locs are suppose to be everything you want them to be, tamed or untamed, uniformed or uniformed, thick or small, color or no color, there are no rules to this.

The minute you feel yourself looking over at someone else’s locs and wishing yours looked the same, do yourself a favor and SNAP YOURSELF OUT OF IT. As humans we tend to want what we don’t have, but that isn’t conducive to a fulfilling life.

Be authentically you from your roots to your tips and indulge in the leisure they give.

These 3 things may truly reevaluate your decision on starting your locs. So take your time before embarking on this journey to figure out if this is the right decision for you.
