This is post about locs and the fear of change.

Do you remember the feeling you felt when you first started your locs?
The thoughts of “Can I going to pull this off?” or “I hope this comes out how I imagined”?
What about when you first moved out? Or taking that job offer across the country?
Actively deciding to change the trajectory of the story you once had planned out, can be haunting.
We often want more for ourselves, but are terrified of what’s on the other side, even if we want it.
In today’s blog post we’re diving into change, from our locs to our life choices, and how leaning in can transform our journey (even if it’s scary).
This post is about locs and the fear of change.

Surrender Control
If you’re a type-A personality like me, someone who likes to control every detail, you know how exhausting it can be. Wanting to be in control of every possible thing in life is not a sustainable way of living. You’ll eventually become burnt out and stressed, causing issues with your health, which then starts to show through your appearance (now THAT’S scary).
Earlier this year, I experienced this firsthand. Everything was moving so fast. I moved into my first apartment. Business was booming. Back-to-back accolades and ambassadorships—it felt like life was changing for the better overnight. But I wasn’t giving myself any real time to rest and reflect.
I was in a mode of fast elevation as I liked to call it. My mentors continued to pour into me, telling me things they thought I should be doing with my business success. And so I followed their guidance, slowly drifting away from what I was truly yearning for: freedom.
In early September, I launched a month-long mentorship program called Leisure Residency for aspiring locticians in Houston, Texas. I knew deep down taking on this endeavor would deplete me energetically, but that’s what seemed to be the next step for locticians who’ve been in business for some years like me. I just thought it was the ‘right’ thing to do.
The response was amazing, I gained lots of engagement and felt like this was the start of my next chapter. I eventually started receiving messages from potential mentees expressing how they wished they were Houston, and they’d have to wait until I decided to take it on the road.
That’s when it hit me.
Since 2020, I’ve cultivated a community of black hair enthusiasts in a way that fuels me energetically, through my blog and social platforms. My reach has gone beyond my own city helping me realize, if the knowledge I could spread be accessible to everyone and still fuels me, why not pour into it?
Loc’d 4 Leisure was created with accessibility in mind, and I believe every loc journey should feel supported no matter where you reside. That’s why I developed “Learn At Your Leisure”, an online evergreen program with everything you need to kickstart your unique path— at your own pace, from anywhere.
Once I let go of the idea of doing things to meet others’ expectations and focused on what fuels me, everything aligned. Letting go of control doesn’t just free your energy, it helps you navigate change more easily, making space to pursue what truly makes you happy.
Think of that one thing you could release today that’s holding you back, would you surrender?
Let It Flow
For those who have started their locs or thinking about doing so, congratulations. You’re already on the road of surrendering. The ongoing theme of a loc journey is trusting the process, which entails, letting go of control. And that’s kinda scary especially for us Black women who put so much of our identity into our hair.
When first starting your locs, you’re either starting with 2 strand twists or coils (we’re just using these for today’s example). That first week feels like a weight has been lifted, you finally embarked on a journey you’ve been dreaming of, and you’re excited for what’s next. But as the months pass and your locs start budding and frizzing, you may start second guessing your readiness of it all.
When you hit those phases of “I don’t know about this”, take a breather, come back to self, and understand that this is what change feels like. In yoga philosophy, the Yamas guide how we live ethically. One of them, Aparigraha, teaches non-attachment—letting go of what we cling to. Letting go of what you thought your journey was ‘suppose’ to look like, releases self-inflicted suffering.
This goes for comparing your journey to others as well. Being content with what your personal journey looks and feels like for you, allows you to be fully present to take in what this journey may be teaching you.
Try this: notice where you’re holding on tightly to expectations, outcomes, even how your hair should look—and consciously let go. See how it shifts your energy and approach to change. Less scary right?

Lean In Anyway
When life throws you lemons, throw them h*es back—or whatever the saying is. Lean into the challenges life throws you—the difficulty, the fear, the uncertainty. This is all our first time living, no one has the answers. But rest assured, anytime you’re looking for one, it’s always within you.
Changing your career might mean leaving the safety of a steady paycheck. Changing your address might mean leaving the friends you’ve had forever. Even switching up your loc style can feel like stepping into the unknown. But what’s on the other side may be the answer to all of your curiosities.
To celebrate October’s theme of spookiness, we’re going to stand up to what scares us. And to be clear, leaning in doesn’t mean you’re not scared—it means you’re willing to show up anyway, even when your heart is racing.
This week, pick one thing you’ve been avoiding because it scares you, even if it’s a small, and lean into it anyway. Take that first step, and watch how it changes your perspective.
Because we only have one life, why let fear hold us back?
