11 Low Effort Back To School Styles For Short Locs

Are you frustrated with your short locs? Wondering how you’re going to style them in a way that fits you?

You’re probably tired of the same old 2 strand/rope twists and or barrel twists. Trust me, I know that feeling all too well.

Styling short locs isn’t as difficult as most make it out to be. School is already stressful as it is—don’t let your hair add to it. With a little creativity and patience, you’ll be able to style your short locs how ever you could imagine.

This post is all about styles for short locs.

Styles For Short Locs

1. Bobby Pin Look

Grab some colored bobby pins, I recommend white, gold, or silver. Place bobby pins in a X shape in the front half of your head. You can add as much or as few as you’d like.

Another way to style the bobby pins is by starting off with a middle or side part, place them near the top of your ear to secure the locs that frame your face. Once placed, continue to add bobby pins in a close fashion to create a bold look that frames your face. This style is one of my favorites because it’s a huge fashion statement and can make any casual outfit pop.

2. Bantu Knots

Anytime I see this style I think it’s the cutest thing ever. Simply section off the front perimeter of your hair then part them into 3-4 ponytails. Twist or roll them up into a ball shape, rubber band them, and you’re done. If want the knots to be a bit more funky, use white rubber bands instead of black to secure them. Or you could also wrap silver or gold string around them to add some extra razzle dazzle if you’d like.

3. Scarf Look

There are so many different ways you can style your scarf but my favorite is the simple over the forehead look. You can take this style from day to night. Simply grab your favorite scarf, your favorite pair of earrings, add a nice swoop side burn baby hair, and you’re out the door. For a more causal day, you can switch out the scarf for a bandana and it’ll still be a look.

You can also try out turban looks. Check out my YouTube video where I tried 4 turban styles when I was only 1 year loc’d!

4. Loc Puff

This style is perfect for the ones who are in their 3-4 month starter loc stage. Your locs should be budding at this point and are probably very frizzy. Take a narrow elastic headband and slide it up onto your head as if you were putting loose natural hair into a puff. Once you got it to your liking, take your spray bottle and mist your ends to add hydration and shine to it. Fluff out the puff throughout the day if it becomes dull.

5. Claw Clip Look

This style is easy and straight to the point. Grab your favorite claw clip (I got mine from Marshalls), gather the top section of your locs, slightly twist them upwards, and clip! To add some more jazz to it, leave out some locs in the front to frame your face. This style is super quick and cute!

6. Pigtails

This style will probably be your best friend for your short locs. You can make these either low, high, or half up half down pigtails. The sky is the limit with this particular style. Leave a few locs out, either the front or back, if you want to add something extra to the style.

7. Scarf Bun

This was one of my favorites when I was first started out with my locs. Give yourself a sleek high pony, make sure there are no lumps, and form it into a bun. Grab your favorite scarf, preferably something on the smaller side, and wrap it around your bun. This style is so different, you’ll be sure to turn heads with this one.

8. Deep Side Part

I don’t think people realize the power a deep side part has. It’s so simple yet effective, you can pull it off on any occasion. Once you’ve chosen your preferable side part, bobby pin the locs at the top so they won’t fall over throughout the day and or night. You could also add in some loc jewelry to really spruce up this look and you’re ready to go.

9. Half up Half Down With Messy Bun

I love half up half down styles but when you turn that ponytail into a bun, a messy one at that, it really elevates it. If you can, allow some locs to spike out of the bun to really make it messy. The messier the bun, the better. You could also leave out a few locs in the front to frame your face.

10. Mohawk

This style may be out the comfort zone for some but if you’re into unique looks, this one is for you. Section your hair vertically from front to back in 3-4 parts. Make each ponytail into a bun and you’re done. Add in hair sticks to take it up a notch or leave out a loc on each side near the ears.

11. All Natural

And the simplest of them all—just leaving them be. Down, frizzy, and not retwisted at all. I know the bed head look isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but the beauty it exudes is effortless. You can put them in a side, middle, or no part at all. Add in a few loc jewels of your liking and lay your edges if that’s your preference—or not. Your locs are already the style, and are beautiful as ever.

I have tried most, if not all of these styles when my locs were on the shorter side, and I loved each and every one of them. Anything that takes me less than 10 minutes is my type of style.

I hope you’re able to use these short loc style ideas in your rotation. And always remember, indulge in the leisure they give.
