Check In With Yourself
Before any decision you make in life, you should always ask yourself questions first. It’s easy to let thoughts of letting your locs go take over, but ask yourself, what was your why for starting locs anyway? What do they mean to you? How do they make you feel?
I know for me it wasn’t a super deep meaning, but I knew they were going to make my life easier. I initially started my locs because I was over dealing with my loose natural hair. It was just too much and the slick back buns wasn’t cutting it anymore.
Since starting my locs my confidence has skyrocketed, my hair has grown to lengths I’ve never experienced, and I feel they complete my overall appearance.
However that looks for you, hopefully these questions bring you back to the very beginning and remind you of the significance your locs bring to your life.

Stay Curious
Coming from someone who dreaded doing their full head of thick hair, I can tell you right now that I am in love with my locs, truly. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get tired of my locs from time to time.
One thing I try to do is stay curious. Stay inspired. I am almost always on Pinterest, finding beauty in nature, going to museums, and taking inspirations from strangers.
Add some curls, a pop of color, or do your favorite loc style a different way. Anything you can think of, think outside of that.
There is beauty in everything and everyone around us. Looking at your typical everyday objects in a different lens can provide you with the inspiration you’ve been looking for.

Switch It Up
Before resulting in cutting or combing your locs out, think about simply switching it up.
If you have long locs, cut them shorter. If you have smaller locs, combine a few. If your locs are super thick, split them.
I’ve combined some of my locs on two occasions already and I plan on going back for more. My loc count went from 96(?) to 88(?) (don’t quote me on that LOL).
Follow along with my combination journey HERE!
Since combining my locs I can say I feel a sense of newness, a sense of change. The overall look of my locs are getting closer to my dream set and I cannot be more excited.
There are many ways you can make a drastic change without compromising your entire crown.

Enhance Them
When all else fails, take a trip to your local beauty supply and go crazy!
There are so many jewels, beads, ribbons, scarfs, etc, to choose from at your beauty supply.
I took a trip to Jamaica a few months ago and I wore a crochet loc sock with one of my outfits. When I tell you game changer? I felt like the epitome of a Rasta when I wore that. Good times.
That one item reminded me that there are so many loc styles and essentials that I haven’t even dived into yet. I then felt that childlike excitement for my locs once again.

Do What’s Best For You
Although I can give you all these helpful tips until I turn blue in the face, at the end of the day, always do what is best for you. Period.
If you feel like your time with your locs are up, then let them go. Don’t overthink about what could have been or regret past decisions you have made with your locs. Don’t stay in a position that not longer aligns with you.
As I always say, everyone’s journey is unique—you must stay true to yourself.
Although I would hate to see a fellow loc sister or brother go (Dr.Umar stare), I always preach about doing what makes self happy.
Getting tired of your locs is normal, we’re human. Take a good look around you, grasp some inspiration, and go back to the drawing board— or not. Always do what’s best for you and your locs.
