Life After Dyed Locs - Loc'd 4 Leisure

We can all agree that we get bored of our locs sometimes, and coloring them is an easy way to spruce up our look. Hair paint wax is a simple non-permanent option to go if you want something you can quickly change up, and then there’s permanent box dye.

Permanently dying your locs is a whole other ball game and requires a lot of attention once it’s done. These simple tips will help you ensure you keep your locs in tip-top shape after your new look!

Conditioner

You may have noticed your locs are drier than usual and that is because of the harsh chemicals in box dyes. Making sure you give your locs a good deep condition on wash days is vital for locking in moisture. Adding in a hooded dryer is a also a great way to aid with the deep condition. Sit for about 25-30 minutes and you will feel the difference.

Misting Locs

Misting locs daily with water is a great way to put moisture back into your locs. Adding in a few essentials oils of your choice is a great add on also. Your locs are prone to dryness now and you want to make sure your locs get their daily dose of water.

Use Color-Safe Shampoo & Conditioner

To keep your dye job vibrant and long lasting, you want to switch to color-safe products. They have specific ingredients that will keep your locs from fading and drying out. Two of my favorites are l’oréal and shea moisture.

Hot Oil Treatments

If nothing helps, hot oil treatments sure will. Gather your favorite oils; black castor, peppermint, coconut, etc, mix them all together in one bottle, and warm it up. You don’t want it too hot or it could burn you, just warm enough for you to feel a nice warmth to your scalp. Oil your locs from root to tip, wrap your locs in a plastic bag or warm towel, and sit under a hooded dryer for 20 minutes.

Keep locs tied up

I left this one last for a reason because it is a no-brainer. Keeping your locs wrapped when you’re about to get in bed or when you’re just chilling in the house is very important to help keep moisturizer into locs. Using a bonnet, durag, satin pillow, or even satin scrunchies if you’re out running errands!
